Join Music Leaders Network in September 2024

5 March 2024

We are delighted to open Music Leaders Network for applications for our new cohort starting in September 2024. Applications are open from 5 March 2024 to 31 May 2024.

The transformational programme, aimed at people with 5-25 years experience is the only UK leadership programme that brings together mid-career women* from across the industry and establishes them in a deliberate peer-to-peer network.

The programme is known for creating effective leaders, giving participants the skills they need to increase their visibility and realise their potential in an industry that is still male dominated.

This was a very intentional step by Remi Harris MBE and Tamara Gal-On:

“The network is so important. It’s woven throughout the whole programme. There are 12 people in each group and our hope is that those people will stay together for the rest of their careers and always have each other to call on for support. This network is making a difference in the music industry as a whole because the people that we’ve worked with are going on to mentor others and to lead in a compassionate and commercial way. They’re having a ripple effect.”

Businesses that invested in their female leaders in 2022 and 2023 cohort included:

PPL, Polydor, FUGA, Blue Raincoat Group / Chrysalis Records, Band on The Wall, MERLIN, Accidental / The Oram Awards, Brownswood Recordings, PRS Foundation, FAE Grp, September Management, Chineke! Foundation, Youth Music, Small Green Shoots, Key Production and the Musicians’ Union, AIM Ireland, BMG, PRS for Music, Welsh National Opera and University of Westminster.

As before, we will provide discretionary bursaries to help towards the costs for self-employed participants and those working for charities.

Katie Eckett, Manager, Business and Legal, MERLIN, Music Leaders Network 2022 said:

“The most important thing I have gotten out of this course is the network of amazing women and the opportunities that have arisen just by knowing them. We have all fed into helping each other, it’s been a massive support network.”

Janeace (Jay-T) Thompson, Director of Talent, Culture & Experience, PRS for Music, said in 2023:

We worked with the business to identify some of our high potential women leaders to put forward for this programme, having heard of its success and the work opportunities the alumnae had secured previously.

We have many talented women here at PRS for Music, as our first participant in Music Leaders Network we sincerely hope that Elaine (Allen, Head of Joint Ventures and Revenue Assurance at PRS for Music, September 2023) will benefit from the programme and that it will yield positive outcomes for her and other future leaders.”

Online Q&A events are taking place on 14 March, 18 April and 14 May where prospective participants or businesses can ask Remi and Tamara questions about the programme.

The programme will last 5 months in total with a 2 week break in December. We expect the preparation for each session to take around 45 minutes, sessions are 90 minutes each, twice per month and then you will have a learning circle which is a small group where you discuss and support each other to implement your learning. The more you engage with and put into the programme, the more you will get out of it.

What materials will I receive?

You'll receive handouts for each session. We are working on making these available in a video and audio format, so that you can choose to consume them while commuting, doing bedtime, or if you simply find audio / video an easier format to work with. It's important that you use the materials, so that we can spend more time discussing and implementing in our group sessions than explaining the concepts.

How can I tell my employer about the programme?

We're happy to meet with businesses to talk about how they can invest in their people development through music leaders network. We have a specific information pack for decision makers in HR/People Teams, Learning and Development and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion leads that we can share with you, and you are welcome to send them the link to this page or let us know what you need via our contact form (below).

Why is this a programme for women, and what does that mean?

This programme is addressed at women as we know that there is a pay and power deficit for women in the music industry. Music Leaders Network covers leadership topics and personal development that are relevant to any leader. The 2020 and 2021 programmes were commissioned by Brighter Sound as part of their Both Sides Now project which works towards gender equality in the music industry. Remi and Tamara coach people of all identities within their practises. There is some content that is specifically about sex-based (gendered) issues in leadership including Imposter Phenomenon (first identified in high-achieving women academics in the 1970s), how men and women's communication differs in the workplace (the work of Deborah Tannen) and draws on the work of Herminia Ibarra, Robin Ely and colleagues about second generation gender bias and women's leadership identity development. Most of the research underlying this is based on the protected characteristic of sex, as a binary male-female. The program centres the experiences of female leaders. It is open to and welcomes all women, trans women and non-binary people who are comfortable with this approach. Get in touch if you have any further questions.

What changes can I expect?

Music Leaders Network is a leadership development programme for mid-career women in music created by Remi Harris and Tamara Gal-On.

The programme has helped network members to become more confident, effective leaders who are realising their full potential in the music industry.

They are doing this by:

  • living by their values at work
  • making ambitious career moves
  • being more visible
  • handling difficult conversations with greater ease
  • improving their communication
  • building powerful networks
  • and asking for (and getting!) the money they want at work.

We work on personal development, integrating leadership theory into your practice, achieving tangible goals and building a group to support you during the programme and beyond.

You’ll be joining a network of 70 women who have invested in developing their careers with us.

You can find out more about some of them on our LinkedIn Page where we share all the latest about the programme.
